February First Friday: Avengers Assemble

Geek out on the first Friday of every month at the St. Louis Science Center!
Learn the real science behind science fiction at our First Fridays events! Each month has a different theme, features free hands-on activities and culminates with a free 10pm screening of a classic science fiction move in the OMNIMAX® Theater. First Friday favorites like public telescope viewings, scifi trivia and special prices for OMNIMAX® films are a staple at every event. Tickets for the free 10pm show are available starting at 6pm on the evening of the First Friday event and are distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Answers to Your First Fridays’ Questions
Tell me more about the special presentation, “The Science of Superheroes”…
Dr. Tom Spudich, professor of Forensic Science at Maryville University, will explore the science behind superheroes’ superhuman powers and reveal what might be able to be replicated in the real world. Dr. Spudich will discuss Batman’s gadgets and offer hypotheses for the superpowers of Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and Superman, among others. Come with your questions!

Join Dr. Dan Yezbick, the 2014 Forest Park Community College Teacher of the Year, for a behind-the-masks tour of the Avengers’ franchise from comic book epic to big screen blockbuster. Learn the secret origins behind the creation of Marvel’s most successful super-group, test your knowledge of Avengers’ membership and milestones and explore the concept’s close ties to other superhero genres and contexts. Capes optional.
Tell me more about the print-making workshop…
In this free workshop led by local artist Tom Huck, you will have the opportunity to create your own print. Tom Huck is best known for his large-scale woodcuts; his woodcut prints are included in many public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Based on a series of his original woodcut designs and inspired by the many insects in Laumeier Sculpture Park. Huck has designed bug-like playground equipment for the Park, Huck’s first public artwork, these monumental insects illustrate how nature and art, when experienced together, can inspire creativity and amusement. Each workshop participant will also receive a Bugz activity book printed for the exhibition at Laumeier Sculpture Park..
How does First Fridays’ Trivia work?
To play, register as an individual or with a team at The Loft. We can accommodate up to 15 teams. There will be five rounds of trivia, with five questions each round. Prizes for the winners of each round!
How do I get tickets for the 10pm movie?
Free tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at any box office, beginning at 6pm. Each person can get up to four tickets for your group. Once you have a ticket, be in the theater by the start of the episode to claim your seat. If all tickets have been given out, visitors can wait in the standby line. After the start-time, people waiting in the standby line can come into the theater, filling all empty seats.
What are the costume guidelines?
We ask that your costume not interfere with your safety or the safety of others. You may use facepaint and partial face-masks. We ask that you carry any full-face masks or helmets while entering and when you are walking through the Science Center. You may wear your headgear while being photographed.
Weapons as part of costumes are subject to the approval of Saint Louis Science Center Security. No firearms or illegal weapons are allowed and if the weapon has a blade, you must have a covering for it.
